What Connects Marvel's Celestials, Eternals, Mutants, Inhumans, and Other Major Races?

This timeline combines the classic and modern Marvel lore into one continuous chronology, explaining how the Celestials, Eternals, Deviants, Humans, Mutants, Atlanteans, Inhumans, Skrulls, Cotati, Kree, Titanian Eternals, and Thanos are all connected.

1. The First Cosmos

First Firmament
The First Firmament

Before the current multiverse existed, there was only the First Firmament, the very first universe.

The First Firmament created two races:

  • Aspirants – obedient servants whose purpose was to preserve the universe exactly as it was.

Aspirants
  • Celestialsimmensely powerful cosmic beings created to spread life, evolution, and change across reality.
  • Celestials
Eventually, the Celestials rebelled against their creator because they believed the universe should constantly evolve rather than remain static.

The God Killer Armor
The God Killer Armor: In a desperate move to combat the Aspirants, the rebellious Celestials created a devastating cosmic weapon known as the Godkiller Armor.

Celestial War

This conflict, known as the the Celestial War, ended with the destruction of the First Firmament.

Its shattered remains became the Second Cosmos, beginning the endless cycle of universes that eventually produced the current Marvel Multiverse.

2. The Celestials Become Gardeners of the Universe

After the First Firmament's fall, the Celestials traveled throughout countless galaxies.

Rather than conquering planets, they acted like cosmic scientists.

They searched for worlds capable of producing intelligent life and genetically modified species to accelerate evolution.

3. The Progenitor Comes to Earth (≈4 Billion Years Ago)

Long before humanity existed, one of the earliest Celestials, the Progenitor (also called the Alpha Celestial), arrived on primordial Earth.

Progenitor

While investigating the universe, the Progenitor became infected by a cosmic parasitic force known as the Horde, whose purpose is to consume Celestials once they have finished seeding life.

The Progenitor died on Earth.

Its enormous body remained buried beneath the planet.

Its blood, energy, and cosmic essence spread throughout Earth's crust and atmosphere, permanently altering the planet's evolution.

Earth became one of the most genetically unique planets in the universe.

4. Zgreb the Aspirant & the Avengers of 1,000,000 BC (≈1 Million Years Ago)

Millions of years later, another cosmic being arrived.

Zgreb

This was Zgreb, an Aspirant sent to investigate what had happened to the Progenitor.

Like the Progenitor before it, Zgreb became infected by the Horde.

Around this time, Earth's earliest superhuman protectors had already formed.

Avengers of 1 Million BC

These heroes became known as the Avengers of 1,000,000 BC, including ancient versions of heroes such as Odin, the Phoenix host, Agamotto, the first Iron Fist, the first Black Panther, the first Starbrand, and Ghost Rider.

Together, they defeated the Horde-infected and severely weakened Zgreb beneath what would later become South Africa.

5. The First Host Arrives

The Celestials eventually arrived to investigate the strange events on Earth.

First Host

This expedition became known as the First Host.

After discovering both the Progenitor's corpse and the imprisoned Zgreb, the Celestials investigated Earth but, for reasons that remain unknown, chose neither to destroy the planet nor disturb the two fallen Celestials. Instead, they began studying Earth's primitive inhabitants and initiated their genetic experiments.

From that point onward, Earth became one of the Celestials' most significant experimental worlds, where they repeatedly returned to observe, judge, and influence the evolution of intelligent life through successive Celestial Hosts.

6. Earth Before Humanity

Primitive human ancestors already lived on Earth.

The Celestials selected these early hominids and divided them into three evolutionary branches.

A. Baseline Humans

Baseline Humans (Humans + Mutants)

Most humans were left largely unchanged.

However, the Celestials secretly implanted dormant genetic potential into humanity.

This hidden mutation would eventually become known as the X-Gene.

For hundreds of thousands of years it remained inactive.

These humans eventually evolved into modern humanity.

B. Deviants

Deviants

The Celestials created the Deviants.

Purpose

  • Encourage rapid evolution.
  • Test endless genetic possibilities.

Characteristics

  • Every child is genetically unique.
  • Constant mutations.
  • Often physically stronger than humans.
  • Extremely long lifespans.
  • Great adaptability.

The Deviants eventually built the first great civilization on Earth.

Their continent became known as Lemuria.

C. Eternals

Eternals

The Celestials also created the Eternals.

Purpose

Unlike the Deviants, the Eternals were designed to remain genetically stable.

They were created to preserve humanity and quietly ensure the Celestials' long-term plans for Earth succeeded.

Characteristics

  • Near immortality
  • Superhuman strength
  • Cosmic energy manipulation
  • Matter manipulation
  • Healing

Unlike Deviants, every Eternal remains genetically stable.

7. The Hidden Truth About the Eternals

For millions of years, the Eternals believed they existed simply to defend Earth from the Deviants.

Much later, they discovered the truth.

The Eternals were actually artificial beings created by the Celestials.

Whenever an Eternal died, the Machine, a planet-wide artificial intelligence built into Earth by the Celestials, resurrected them in a new body.

However, every resurrection secretly required the life-force of an ordinary human.

The Eternals had unknowingly sacrificed humanity for millions of years.

8. Rise of the Deviant Empire

The Deviants rapidly multiplied.

They founded the vast empire of Lemuria.

Eventually they grew arrogant enough to rebel against both the Eternals and even the Celestials themselves.

This began countless wars between Eternals and Deviants spanning hundreds of thousands of years.

The Eternals generally prevailed because of their superior stability and immense power.

9. The Second Host and the Great Cataclysm

Eventually, the Celestials returned to Earth as the Second Host to evaluate the results of their earlier genetic experiments.

Seeing the Deviants' corruption, the Celestials judged their civilization unworthy.

Second Host

They destroyed much of Lemuria.

The resulting global catastrophe caused entire continents to sink beneath the oceans.

Atlantis(Before)

Two civilizations disappeared beneath the sea:

  • Lemuria
  • Atlantis

10. Origin of Atlantis

Atlantis(After)

The destruction of Atlantis did not kill everyone.

Some surviving humans adapted over many generations to life beneath the ocean.

Eventually they evolved into the Atlanteans.

11. Eternal Civil War

Although immortal, the Eternals did not always agree.

One Eternal named Uranos believed they should conquer humanity instead of protecting it.

Uranos

He started a civil war.

The peaceful factions led by Kronos and his brother Oceanus defeated Uranos. Uranos was imprisoned within the Exclusion, while many of his followers were either mind-wiped or exiled into space.

Kronos

Later, while studying the cosmic energy that empowered the Eternals, Kronos successfully isolated it within a containment vessel. The vessel ruptured and exploded, destroying his physical body and the Eternal city of Titanos while transforming Kronos into a disembodied cosmic entity. The explosion also increased the powers of the surviving Eternals, eventually leading to the creation of the Uni-Mind.

His sons became the next leaders:

  • Zuras, who ruled the Earth Eternals.
  • A'lars, also known as Mentor.

Rather than fight his brother for leadership, A'lars voluntarily left Earth.

12. Founding of Titan

Sui-San and A'Lars

A'lars traveled to Titan, Saturn's largest moon, where he found an ancient Eternal colony descended from Uranos' exiled followers. There he met Sui-San, the colony's sole surviving Eternal. Together, they rebuilt Titan into a flourishing civilization.

This new society became known as the Titanian Eternals.

Unlike the Earth Eternals, they focused on science, philosophy, and diplomacy.

13. The Skrulls, Cotati and Kree

While all of this was happening on Earth, another story unfolded elsewhere in the galaxy.

Skrulls
The Skrulls

The Skrulls evolved on the planet Skrullos.

They possessed a remarkable natural ability:

  • Shape-shifting.

At the time, the Skrulls were peaceful explorers and scientists.

Kree

The Kree

On the nearby planet Hala, another civilization evolved. These were the Kree.

Originally they were:

  • Primitive
  • Militaristic
  • Technologically inferior

Cotati

The Cotati

Sharing Hala with them were another intelligent species: The Cotati.

They were:

  • Plant-based
  • Highly telepathic
  • Peaceful
  • Deeply spiritual
  • Extremely intelligent

14. Why the Skrulls Visited Hala

The Skrulls had become an advanced interstellar civilization.

They routinely searched for younger intelligent species that could become allies.

When they discovered Hala, they found both the Kree and the Cotati living there.

Unable to decide which race deserved advancement, they organized a peaceful competition.

15. The Competition

The Skrulls transported seventeen Kree and seventeen Cotati to separate barren worlds, giving each group one year to demonstrate which race was more worthy of receiving Skrull knowledge and technology.

The Kree used their resources to construct an impressive city on the Blue Area of Earth's Moon, while the Cotati transformed a lifeless world into a flourishing garden through their telepathic connection with plant life.

Blue Area of The Moon

Although impressed by the Kree's engineering, the Skrulls judged the Cotati's achievement to be the greater accomplishment and declared them the worthier civilization.

The Kree felt humiliated.

16. The Kree Rebellion

The Kree launched a surprise attack.

They massacred nearly every Cotati.

They also killed most Skrulls visiting Hala.

The Kree then stole Skrull spacecraft and advanced technology.

Using this technology, they founded the Kree Empire.

This betrayal began the ancient Kree-Skrull War, one of the greatest conflicts in Marvel history.

17. Why the Kree Came to Earth

As the Kree Empire expanded, they established an outpost on Uranus, where they encountered members of Uranos' Eternal faction. After capturing and studying an Eternal named Arlok, the Kree discovered that the Celestials had genetically altered humanity on nearby Earth. Intrigued by humanity's extraordinary dormant genetic potential, the Kree launched an expedition to Earth. Believing they could create powerful super-soldiers for the Kree–Skrull War while also studying a possible solution to their own evolutionary stagnation, they abducted groups of early humans and began extensive genetic experiments.

18. The Kree Meet the Titanian Eternals

As the Kree Empire expanded across the galaxy, it encountered many advanced civilizations. Among them was the Eternal colony on Titan, ruled by A'lars.

Unlike the Earth Eternals, who largely remained hidden from humanity, the Titanian Eternals openly participated in galactic affairs. As a result, their civilization became well known to many interstellar powers.

The Titan Eternals maintained peaceful diplomatic relations with most major galactic civilizations.

19. Birth of the Inhumans

The Kree transformed these humans into the Inhumans.

Inhumans

Purpose

To create living weapons for the Kree–Skrull War.

Terrigen Mist
Features

  • Human appearance
  • Dormant superpowers
  • Powers activated by Terrigen Mist and Terrigen Crystals
  • Artificially engineered genetics
Terrigen Crystals

Eventually the Kree abandoned the project because it proved unpredictable.

The Inhumans escaped.

20. Rise of Attilan

Attilan

Led by King Myran, the Inhumans established the hidden city of Attilan on an island in the North Atlantic Ocean, where they developed into one of Earth's most advanced civilizations. Over the millennia, Attilan was equipped with powerful anti-gravity technology, allowing the entire city to be relocated through the air to several different locations whenever the Inhumans sought greater safety or secrecy.

There, they also established a hereditary royal family to lead their society, a Genetics Council to oversee Terrigenesis and regulate the Inhumans' genetic future, and a tradition of living in strict isolation from ordinary humanity to protect their people and preserve their unique culture.

21. Birth of Mutants

Meanwhile, humanity continued evolving naturally.

Mutants

Over thousands of years, the Celestials' dormant X-Gene slowly activated.

Unlike Inhumans:

  • No Terrigen Mist or Crystals were required.
  • Powers developed naturally.
  • Most mutations appeared during puberty.

One of the earliest known mutants was Selene, born roughly 17,000 years ago.

Eventually millions of mutants appeared across Earth.

22. Birth of The Mad Titan

A'lars and Sui-San eventually had two sons:

Starfox

  • Eros (Starfox) → charismatic, compassionate, and genetically normal.

Thanos

  • Thanoswas born with Deviant Syndrome, a rare genetic atavism that emerged after A'lars and Sui-San succeeded in conceiving one of the first naturally born Eternal children.

Although his appearance resembled that of a Deviant, Thanos remained a Eternal. His mutation granted him extraordinary physical strength, durability, and resilience far beyond that of most other Titanian Eternals.

As he grew older, Thanos became obsessed with death, power, and what he believed was universal balance. Combining a brilliant intellect with unmatched ambition and immense physical power, he rose to become one of the most feared beings in the universe.
